14.5 horse Briggs won't shut off

Does anyone here happen to know how a Briggs & Stratton 14.5 horse engine is wired? Overhead-valve, single-cylinder, model 287707, type 015301. I am at a location where I have no reference books to look it up. Engine has four wires coming out of it. I know some are for the alternator but don't know why there are four. The ignition switch is working as it should and sending a ground signal to one of the black wires coming out of the engine but it does not shut off. If it had a gear trans - I just stall it out, but it is on a hydrostatic drive tractor and the only way I can shut it down is by choking it.

Be VERY VERY careful what you mess with in that plug. You can have ground. 12 volt+ output, some have altinator lines and 12volt return for the gas solenoid. Depends what ya got. The "magneto" line is usually black and that is what will shut off your engine. Remove the engine cover and look things over. You could have a broken on/off switch. The ground out wire for your coil comes from the switch.

Jeffcat is right. If you put 12v to the ground wire on the ignition module, it will fry it and then you will need another module.
Its easy enough to check which wire it is to the module, just remove the cover and trace the wire back to that plug.

Since you say your ignition switch is grounding one of the terminals in the plug, then the problem is probably on the engine any way and you will still have to take the cover off and inspect the wire to the module.

Back of Key switch.

M = Red (Ignition ground)

L = Purple (Fuel shut off solenoid)

S = Blue (Starter solenoid)

B = Black (Fuse block) One in from the switch, two out (one Black to starter solenoid and one Red to the engine ground).

G = Green (Will branch off twice. One with a Yellow wire going to the seat switch and again with a blue wire going to the Module)

Key positions.

Key Off = M, G, Body

Key On = B, L

Start = B, L, S
