John Deere X485

I bought a new to me X485 last week. 1st question: I am looking for the side panels that go between the lower part of the dash and the hood. I think that
they are referred to as a "closeout panel" I have included a picture of the one I bought vs one that has the panels. Does anyone know of a good lawnmower
salvage yard that could help? 2nd question: I would like to disable the feature that disengages the mower blades when I back up. I have looked for a switch
by the reverse pedal and have had no luck. Where can I disable it? My 425 did not have this annoying safety feature. Thanks for your help.

Tried to answer this earlier, but rainstorm knocked satellite signal. Got a tad over 5" rain since Sunday morning here in east central Mn.
Anyway, if it is anything like my 180, look for a yellow button on left side of dash, near throttle lever. To back up with the blades running, push the button, step on reverse pedal. Can release the button once running backwards. It you let the pedal all the way up things return to normal, have to push button again each time want to back up.

The panels aren't TOO horribly priced from DEERE, for used, try giving Rusty Jackson Leonard, ND 58052 a call. (701) 645-9089

Willie, thanks for the reply. The only lever on the left side of the dash is the throttle. The deck engage button/lever is on the right, beside the cruise and above the parking brake lock. I have found a couple of videos on youtube, but none cover the larger X JD tractors.

Bob, thanks for the lead. I will call them shortly. The panels, complete, are a little spendy. LH is over $60 and RH is over $80. Trying to look up all the individual parts on JD's new site is a P.I.T.A. I have called my local JD dealer too. They do not sell a complete panel assembly.

I've got a 130 with the same PITA safety feature. I haven't got mad enough yet to look into disabling it but I think the switch might be around the PTO lever. You can back up without using that button if the blades are off. So that makes me think it is the position of that lever that triggers the switch.

When I bought my X595 13 years ago it had that "backup safety" on it. One of the first things I did was disable it (and others) as it was hard to hold the safety bypass lever and watch where you were backing at the same time. I am sure this idea came from the legal department at JD but it seems like a backup alarm would be more practical if something like that was required. Anyway, I studied the wiring diagram in the technical manual to find the switch that controlled this and rewired it so it was permanently bypassed. I don't have a manual/wiring diagram for the X485 so I have no idea as to how it would work on your mower. The switch on mine was on the reverse pedal linkage if I remember correctly.
By the way, my X595 has been and still is a great mower.

You should be able to hold the pto switch up while pushing on the rev pedal to keep it running. Once you are moving in rev, you can release the switch.

Mark, I tried "Harolds" in Missouri. They have no 400 series mowers on the grounds.
The lead from ND said that on a mower that new, he turns the parts around on ebay as soon as they hit his door. Nothing in stock. It's not that I need the mower to look new, these side panels hold the hood down and keep it from bouncing around. Thank-you for trying.

Ken, the switch on the X485 doesn't go back down when I hit the reverse pedal, it stays in the up/engaged position. To re-engage, I have to either be motionless or moving forward, push the button down, then pull it up again. I have looked under the machine at the pedal linkage, no button or wiring that I can see. I may have to stop at the dealer and see if they will give me a wiring diagram. It's a safety thing, just like the "operator presence" switch, but it must be a little more complicated to defeat.
Thanks for your reply.

I know it doesn't physically move but there is an electrical disconnect. As far as I know, all x series have the RIO (reverse implement override) function. The switch should have a small amount of up overtravel that activates that function.

the PTO turns off when braking also I think. The switch may be on the left side under the footrest.

To back up and keep mower engaged, pull up on the pto switch. A yellow light will come on, on the dash. I have 270hrs on my x485 and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. It was a spendy machine in '04, my dad told me I was nuts for buying it.

Matt and Ken, pulled up on the pto button and worked just like you said. Thanks. Still a pain though. After calling several lawnmower salvage yards I gave up, and ordered the panels, less the screens, from JD. I will attempt to make my own screens. Just think $80 for 3 pieces of wire mesh is silly.

Thanks to all for your help.
