specs call for 240in lb. which converts to 20 ft.lb on k301 kohler. don't have metric wrench can I just do 20lb with regular wrench & be safe. HAPPY 4TH!!!!! thanks for any replies.

So, you don't have a metric socket to fit the bolts? And you have a foot pound torque wrench?

If you have the right socket, yes you can use the foot pound wrench at 20 ft lbs.

For the price of a socket, I would rather have the peace of mind!

I don't understand the question. All Kohler k301s that I am aware of use standard size fastners. The only exception that I can think may be if you have a different rod than the original, with different fasteners.

If the spec. calls for 240 in.lb., then 20 ft.lb. should be fine with your torque wrench.

If it is a replacement rod, be sure to use the torque spec. that was in the package the rod came in, which may be different from the manual.

I wouldn't. Inch lbs is much more accurate, besides if it is a clicker wrench most ft lb versions don't even adjust down that low... and no torque wrench is as accurate in its lower most 20% of its RANGE than in the top 80% of its range (notice the rated range rarely starts at "0" which ever scale you might be using!!! With Kohlers tendency to blow shortly after a rebuild I would do it right, with an inch pound torque wrench... Im sure you gotta know someone that has one you could use for long enough to finish this rebuild.

I have to disagree: Inch pound torque wrenches are not any more accurate than FT Lb ones if they are calibrated, all the Ft lb wrenches I have go as low as 20 FT LB and clicker types are just a accurate as a dial type if calibrated the only ones that are pretty much worthless are wandering arm / rod things.
Go ahead and torque your bolts per the specs with your wrench my Kohler manual says a higher torque but as posted if its and aftermarket rod it could be that number.

This might help in your quandry. It is from a Woods service manual (if wondering)

i thought that to, but rebuild warranty will not go for it so do it in inch lbs, but on your own probably would not. i have both types of torque wrenches anyway have for several years so no big deal.

i have both inch pounds and foot pounds and would use the spec given.it would be hard to argue that a calibrated wrench would be any better either size but as calibrated each is given a plus or minus value. so if each wrench was off by 3% how much difference is there? you do the math!
