Will I had some time today to work on my Case 444 w/a Kohler 14hp ..... I get it running about 1/2 open and it runs good for awhile then it will backfire ... I check the points and the gap on the valves ... it all check out good ..
Question : as I was checking the valve gap , I used the starter to turn it over a few times ... anyway I put my hand on the coil { don't know why } and it was HOT .. you could not hang on to it , it was that hot .
Is it suppose to be hot just turning the engine over a few times ???? or is this something else I need to replace ... I'm getting a new engine one pc. at a time { kind of like Johnny Cash lol }

I appreciate any advice you share ................ mark

Sounds like the coil is bad or incorrect for the application. It needs a coil that does NOT require an external resistor, in my experience genuine Kohler coils are the best choice.

Timing is determined by tweaking the point gasp, while using a timing light, NOT by the use of a feeler gauge..

Below is a link to the genuine Kohler service manual that details the correct timing/point setting procedure.

You know, I had one of those k-series that would backfire and it fixed that one to replace the wire from the coil to the points. Although I never proved it, I think the original wire was shorting through the insulation where it went through the metal clips.

+1. go to www.redsquarewheelhorsetractorforum.com they have manuals with kohler engines with all the specs. have info on other garden tractors.

Mark, make certain that the condenser is on the correct side of the coil........... I once had it mixed up by accident and the 444 would backfire jump and jerk around quite a bit...
