I have a 2009 CC2542 lawn tractor with a 42" mower.
It has about 680 hrs on it & I just shredded the 2nd PTO belt.
The 2nd belt was dealer bought.
What is normal belt life in this case?

Your PTO belt life will depend on a lot of things. How heavy of grass or weeds that you cut. How clean do you keep the top of deck around belt. Belt tension and aliment and quality of belt. I don't buy belts from dealer I buy from a electrical shop and find the belts to be of better quality.

If you are getting over 300 hours out of a belt you are doing well.

Be sure to check your idler pulleys and spindles for dry or rough bearings. A bad bearing can greatly shorten the life of any belt.

Thanks for the replies. I bought a new belt from the dealer today for $38. It seems like the last one was around $50.

whats a normal life for each machine and owner will never be the same. have several that get long life out belts( several seasons) and if you only on second would not complain. i have several that do not get over month. mowers are not bulldozers or stump cutters but several customers think they ARE.people loading and unloading mowers off trailers will keep any shop in business.

Wait until you buy belts for a Woods zero turn radius mower. They are kevlar belts and cost around $200 each!

I put the new belt on & mowed grass today.
That's the easiest belt installation ever.

Neighbor lady has a 2542 that I have replaced the belts on four times this Summer alone.

Two were Cub factory belts that did not last a day the other that blew was a Dayco from Advance Auto that lasted three mows before it gave out.

Took an old belt i had to do some testing with and found that if the deck was lowered to a setting below 4 the belt would ride the top edge of the idler pulley and wear from the inside out and fly off. Set the deck to 4 or 5 and it did fine. I fixed it so that no one could lower the deck below 4 and she has not had a problem since I install the fifth new belt (Dayco).

She is one of those types that thinks grass should be cut low enough that the roots show and have to walk through mud when it rained. Now her grass is at about 2 1/2" and looks better than it ever has.
