grounding out

Am working on a rear engine snapper with 12.5 Briggs engine. Engine cranked over fine but wouldn't start. Finally unhooked ground wire that goes to coil from the little insulated kill bolt on side of motor. Engine starts fine. Wire bare and grounding out somewhere or maybe bad safety switch. Haven't took top cover off motor yet to check there.

I have had more then one of those shut off ground things that sit on the throttle cable area go bad and cause that problem. Shoot the push mower I use for my lawn had that problem so I just cut/pulled the wire off the carb throttle plate and have it hanging out so I can grab it and short it out to shut it down

I sold and serviced Snapper riders for over twenty years. More likey a bad safety switch or the control module for the switches is bad. The number of switches and location of the switches will depend on the series number.

You are certainly on the right track. It could be a control module or a safety switch. I just wanted to add that the last rear engine Snapper I worked on that would not start had a bare wire in the tube between the front and rear wheels. The ignition switch was on the steering column on that model.

I've had mice chew wiring, up inside engines, hard to figure out until you disassemble things and see it.
