IH cub cadet 1250

Hi I have an IH cub cadet 1250 with a Kohler 12hp single cylinder cast iron block has over 2000hours on it and it burns a little oil I love mowing my grass with it but last week when I was cutting grass it was dieing out like it wasn't getting any fuel so I figured it was the fuel filter I replaced it still did the same thing but smoking alot of blue smoke more than it usually did I figured the carb needed cleaning so I tore it down and put it in carb cleaning solution and left it soak for a week pulled it out cleaned it installed a new kit and reassembled and installed it and started it up let warm up a Bit and adjusted the carb to where it sounded good starting mowing about 15mins later it was back to doing the same thing I tried readjusting the carb didn't help any I even tried the carb from my 1450 and it didn't help smokes lots of blue smoke and dies it always does it at half throttle up to full throttle I'm wondering if I have a busted ring due to the number of hours that are on it because the problem is still there no what carb is on it

Brad Vinkemeier:

Geez, that was one hell of a long sentence.

In being short, simple, and to the point, the Kohler engine needs to be rebuilt. It is way past time for that.

Agreed, You might have other problems but when K Kohler gets worn to that point they will run decently cold but lose power as they warm up to the point where they will hardly pull themselves with no load.

2000 hrs., if it don't need an overhaul it missed a good chance. You must of taken pretty good care of it.

Disagree- if we took care of 'em on the golf course they'd run about 3,000 hours before they needed a rebuild. I think I'd look at a coil or a condenser or if it's electronic what ever system it has might be black smoke you're seeing 'cause it's losing spark and pumping un-burned fuel out the exhaust. Our sand rake had a K-181 on it and it was mis-engineered for that unit without the improvement kit the engines would go about 1200 hours maximum, had a few that were end of life engines and they'd run okay but use a pint of oil every 4 hours, and when I installed the improvement kit (much bigger remote air filter and some changes inthe hydrostat) service life was more normal on them. Once they went to the 10HP (K242) engines emgine life wasn't a problem
