Kohler K341 Rebuild

I would like to know if it is worth rebuilding a K341, it has a high idle knock, and i dont know what it could be.

Have you isolated the engine from whatever it drives so you are certain it is the engine and not drive related? Hard to pin down a cause when we are not hearing it ourselves, there are many things that cause them to knock. Basically you tear them down and check clearances against the manual and the cause will become obvious. Being a high quality engine the K Kohler is totally rebuildable. The cost varies greatly with how much of the work you preform and what needs replaced, where you buy it and how much machine work is required. The low end of cost is an aftermarket kit that you can install yourself. About $100 delivered. The other end of the cost scale is Genuine Kohler parts installed by a professional shop along with crank grind, valve seat work and bore work will push that cost up considerably. $500-800 maybe more, depends on local shop rates. The condition of the rest of the machine comes into play when you start spending money for rebuilding and in the end it is your pocketbook not mine thus only you can decide if it is worth rebuilding, we can only give you some numbers to look at.

The "K" engines are some of the toughest you could get. Well worth the rebuild. I know where there is a brand new one in the box and the guy wants over $1,300 for it.

I have a K341AQS that I swapped into a Case 444 Garden tractor. It is a strong performer and very tough engine. It is highly sought after by garden tractor pullers. I have run a couple of Kohler K series engines that had a light rattle at idle. Could be the piston pin, governor, or balance gears causing it. It is certainly an engine that deserves a quality rebuild. My experience rebuilding the K series engines with the cheap aftermarket kits is that they run good for a couple of seasons, then start burning oil again. Since the labor is the same either way, the next one I rebuild I will use Kohler parts. Make sure that items like the valve guides are not overlooked. A proper rebuild should provide a very long lasting engine, just like they were from the factory.
