Zero Turn Recommendations

My 24-rear-old Murray is on it's last legs. I'm hoping to replace it with a lightly used commercial grade zero turn. Our lawn is about one irregularly shaped acre with many obstacles (trees, buildings, etc.).

What brand and size do you recommend?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

We had a Scag Turf Tiger at our church. Was reliable as a tank and would really take a beating. New guys would smack into light poles, walls, etc. Very fast. Don't know if other brands are more comfortable. It would jar you teeth loose but it sure would fly.

Just remember that Zero turns with hydraulics are VERY expensive to fix. Close to $1000.oo per side on some machines.

Most of the commercial mowers around here have switched to ExMark. I have been told they ride better are lighter and last better than mowers they have had in the past.I Have never been on one of any brand. I have to wear out the JD F-932 before I look at anything else.:)

Any "litely" used commercial brand would be OK. When I say "litely" I mean 500 hours or less. I mow about 1-1/2 acres with a Dixie Chopper Classic with a 50" deck. In my opinion Dixie industrial grade ZTR's are indestructible. I used my first Dixie for10 years with ZERO issues or problems. Heavy duty pumps and motors which others such as Exmark and Scag don't use. There are several definitions of heavy duty. But dealer support is important. And as others have stated they ain't cheap to repair. If I was to buy another brand it would be a Ferris. Just my two cents. Good luck.

I have a 1992 exmark with 125hrs I bought brand new. You have to do a lot of mowing to put any hours on a good zero turn mower.

I have not even replaced a belt yet.

Gravely makes a good commercial mower, very reasonable in price as well. Stay away from ZTRs with stamped decks, they crack in a short time of use.

I have about the same scenario as you and I have a 2011 eXmark Pioneer S Series with a 52 inch deck. I think they consider this a heavy duty consumer machine. I bought it used with 90 hours on it and I have mowed a lot of grass with zero issues. I would highly recommend getting the 52 inch deck because it is a little easier to trim around things with it compared to the 48 and smaller. I have spent a lot of time on a Walker and it is a heck of a mower but it will beat you to death. For a non-suspended machine, the eXmark rides pretty good as long as you follow tire inflation recommendations from the mfg.

I bought a new Lazer Z Exmark in 2004, 27HP, 72" cut. It has been an awesome machine. I love it! No problems so far!

That is one segment of machines that is loaded with manufactures and all sort of styles ! I see one country clipper ? I believe is advertising a flip up deck as does Kubota in some models. That would be a really good feature to have as might be a joystick control and a full suspension seat. I would highly recommend a Kawasaki or Honda engine if going gas. Diesel would be Kubota.

I've got a turf tiger Skag 61" commercial, got 650 hours replaced one fuse holder is all ever done to it.Still a great mower.Decided to get a new one,but they would only allow me $1800. For it so I kept it.i got a ferris the biggest one 37 hp big block Briggs 72" cut. Also got suspension seat it rides Like a Rolls Royce. That is Skag is tuff as nails, but no comparison to the ride,I tried out the Skag Cheetah,it's a good mower with suspension, but no comparison to the ferris. They are convincing.

I wonder where a person finds an "lightly used" commercial grade mower? My guess is that would be one rare machine! The people that spend the extra $$$ to get a good setup usually trade every year or two because the mowers are on borrowed time at 2 years old.
That added to the fact that a minimum wage unskilled worker that just plain doesn't care or doesn't know any better has used the bump-and-turn method, "forgot" to grease the machine, and generally abused the mower in such a way that its 60% worn out at one year old.
Is that one year old mower then a bargain at 60% of new price? 50%? 30%?
I guess anything is possible.

Actually "it's" is a rule breaker, not showing possession, but rather the contraction for "it is."

have e demo dixon dx152 never sold yet has 55.6 hrs on it 6500 new now 5900. then course you can be in 61 inch for 2500 only 100hrs. come drive one ferris they are the best ride out there and i also put suspension seat on them also really ride nice. any color out there you can switch what makes them go just get one you can stand to ride. me i would go with very popular z54 brand new for 2995.00. come test drive anything in the showroom.
