Yazoo YR48 Master Mower

I have an old Yazoo zero turn. It is old enough that it has the 2 speed twin disc clutch type transmission. It has a cast iron single cylinder Briggs and Stratton. I think it is 16 hp, although I cannot find anything on the engine to verify that. I am looking for the engine identification information. I removed and cleaned the flywheel cooling shroud. I was told that was a common location. No information stamped on it. I removed the gas tank looking for the information on the block there. Again no ID. I am next going to clean off the carburetor side of the block and around the flywheel to see if is any information there. Any other ideas on where to look? On occasion I need to order parts and it is "hope and poke" to try to get the correct parts. Thanks in advance, I will respond if I find out anything. Also posted in Tractor Talk

I for got to mention that it has the starter/generator to help with the age range.

Early B&S horizontal-crankshaft engines (1950's-1960's) had the Model-Type-Serial numbers stamped into a plate which covered the rear part of the cooling fins. ....Sometimes these plates were removed and not replaced.

Some of the later (late 1960's-1980's) B&S horizontal engines had the numbers stamped into the flywheel shroud. ...Some were at the flat area at the top of the shroud, some were on the left side on the flat area near the intake, some were on the left side of the shroud on the round portion, and some where stamped into the flat area just above the starter pulley.

Yazoo started building Zero turn mowers at least in the 50's
I did not find any numbers stamped on the tinwork, or a separate nameplate as someone else had suggested. I took the tinwork off and wire brushed it pretty smooth and no numbers appeared.

I haven't been on this site before, but was looking for something else and ran across your post. I have been selling Yazoo mowers for over 40 years. Just delivered a used one Saturday. Your mower no doubt has a B&S Model 326437 engine, but the Type numbers are different depending on age. The B&S parts book for that model covers Models 326400 through 326499 and a host of types. That should give your dealer enough info, and you can identify your part by the illustration. On another note the original Yazoos were not a zero turn. they would pivot on one wheel, but had a turning radius. A zero turn mower is when one wheel goes forward and the other goes rearward, so the unit turns within it's own length.

I just scrapped one of those due to forward going out in the transmission, though reverse was great, I saved the engine because it ran so great, mine is a 326437 model, date code from 1976, yes the numbers are on the shroud. On the side, below the air cleaner elbow. I had to look hard to be able to read it all, parts were very legible others were not.

Don, I hate to tell you this but your trans maybe did not go out.I have had many calls from people saying my Yazoo will go in reverse but will not go forward. And the only problem was the HI-LOW shifter lever had inadvertently got moved in the center to a neutral position. When that lever is in the center between HI and LOW the mower will not go forward but it will back up just fine.

I've received great advice about projects I'm working on. Yesterdays tractors and guests are amazing. I just registered because I started playing with Yazoo. I've been mowing with a PTO 60 for about 23 years but never needed advice before. Yazoo just kept working. I've read about how to correct problems with my John Deere 212, 216 and 316. I've also read about specs for my ford 8n. When I needed work on my Yazoo and the local dealer said he would no longer work on it because he could no longer get parts I decided to work on it myself. The posts I looked at previously where 10 plus years old and I thought Yazoo was a forgotten product. I ran across this recent post and am happy to find that Yazoo is still popular. I bought a YHR23K and changed the tar, I mean oil. I then drained the transaxle and replaced that oil. One of the two gas tanks leaked so I trashed it. After removing and cleaning the remaining tank, new gas lines and a new filter I could not get gas to exit the fuel pump. I inspected it and found it to be one block of rust. After installing a new plastic fuel pump (yes plastic) I got gas to the carb but still not running well. So I inspected the carb. After breaking it I decided to talk to a local mower repair shop. They had a carb off a Kohler 20hp that was out of a running John Deere tractor and he assured me it would work on my Kohler 23hp engine. I will say it did bolt up BUT did not work. I then brought the original carb back to the local dealership that had originally sold my mower new, they rebuilt the carb for me. Now I have a mower that will probably last another 20 years or the rest of my mowing life.
Being a gluten for punishment and having my yard mowed I decided to take on my original mower. Needing a transaxle I found a Yr48 with a transaxle that looks almost exactly like the one in my pto60. I think I can unbolt it and bolt it into the pto60, problem is the trans slips and I'm not sure I want to split the trans. The first mower has a HI LOW gear that just floats on the shaft and the inner discs on the 48 do not appear to exist. If I can break a carbrater what could I do to a transmission? Do I just sell two broke machines with great engines? I almost forgot that when I drained the oil from the tran in the 48 a few gear teeth of some kind dropped out.
