Briggs 6.5 starting problems

My BIL has a powerwasher with a Briggs and Stratton 6.5hp. He was using it the other day and it just quit running. New plug, it has spark, he has removed the carb and made sure all the passages were clear. Put gas directly in spark plug hole. Won't fire a lick. The flywheel key has been check we took the head off and looked at the valves. They seem to work as they should. I assume it has the ACR starting system, as the intake opens some at about 1/4" btdc. But the exhaust valve also opens some during the rotation of the flywheel. Could the ACR be giving problems? Thanks...

I had a pressure washer in the shop here back in the spring and the plastic timing gear had stripped and the cam was out of time. It seemed to have all the necessary things: spark compression and fuel too, but wouldn't run.
It had gas in the crankcase too, which I think caused it to overheat and then the gear stripped.

B&S has made more than a few different 6.5HP engine models would help to have that information. But looking at ACR's in general they are spring applied and released when flyweights overpower the spring. They are pretty goof proof in my experience and when they do fail its the spring which results in the ACR not working and that would not stop the engine when running. If it has the plastic gears a safe bet would be what TRK suggested. A quick check for timing is to rotate the engine the way it runs watching the valves work. One stroke you should have both valves closed as you approach TDC. Then on the the next turn the exhaust should be closing as you approach TDC and the intake should begin opening just as you approach TDC. Thus at (or very near) TDC you should have both valves slightly open, the exhaust just about to close, and the intake just beginning to open.

After spinning the engine with a impact wrench,we have decided it doesn't have compression to run. The exhaust valve opens some when it isn't supposed to. Time for one of those Honda Clone Engines. Anyone need one for parts? Thanks for the help.

This will not help you with your engine. One time I tried spinning a Briggs Engine with an impact wrench and snapped off the threaded part of the crankshaft off. Welded the crankshaft to the flywheel. It worked for years after that.
