JD X340 riding mower - carb problems

Hello. Im not really a small engine guy. Hope someone can help.

According to the numbers, I have a 2007 machine, purchased from the original owner about 2 1/2 years ago. I've put about 150 hours on it(total hrs ~750). It's always seemed to have carb related problems, would hunt for idle, didn't seem responsive at times, but it mowed decent.

Did spring maintenance, noticed clear plastic gas filter had black gunk, has since been replaced. Took off and cleaned carb. No rebuild. Black tip on float valve seemed good under bi-focals. Reassemble, once it got gas, seemed to run ok. Would restart w/no problems. Mowed once around a 1/2 acre pasture. Will not restart. Thinking it was flooded, waited 2+ hours, still no restart.

I've never worked on such a machine. Not sure where to go next.

Thanks much,
cityboy.

The black gunk in the fuel filter is from your rubber fuel hose.
The inside of the hose is deteriorating. You need to replace the
hose.

Replace the hose, and filter. Pull the carb and either dunk in a sonic cleaner or spray out with carb and choke cleaner. Would not hurt to pull the valve cover and check or reset valves, may not want to tackle it solo if you aren't familiar with engines. Work as a deere tech. We start with checking spark, then clean carb and then move on to valves especially if it's a higher hour machine (750 is a higher hour machine)
