Hi, I having a starter problem, I metered this and I measure a short from stud to ground. So I did rebuild of this changed the field coil unit and brushes, mounts. Old field coil was damaged Insulation was melted off. The starter really looked in bad shape really dirty etc., I only had this for about 2 months and went bad. The guy I brought this from had it stored in barn. anyhow I did this rebuild and still have same problem powered up and no turn , dead. upon checking again the pos. stud to ground reads shorted. I removed again., check over cannot find anything else. could this armature be shorted? when armature is removed reads no short. install armature and reads short. little confused whats up with this and need some advice. thank you jim

HOW are you measuring the "short"?

Any starter will have very low resistance from it's power terminal to ground, when measured with an Ohmmeter.

Most likely, the starter is OK and there's something wrong from a weak battery to a poor connection that takes either the hot side or the ground to the starter.

this is not just low resistance zero's out. shouldn't I be able to apply power 12v to the starter itself and get it to turn or hum something? when applying just at moment does have a very hard spark like there is a short. just was looking to check starter making sure it is ok. but don't get it move at all or do anything.

HMMM, you must actually have a short then.

Is there a short when checked from the commutator bars to the armature laminations or shaft?

if I measure from commutator bars to the shaft I get a reading of 3.7 K , If I do this 180 degree test bar to bar I get a reading of 0.2 . The bottom end of this armature is heavy dirt like rock at end trying to clean out of wires etc., cannot do. see little rusting too. shouldn't I be able to run this apply sperate power to it?

just had the armature checked and it test good he said. The reading from stud term. and case reads 0.3 3 tens , the reading of 3.7k is with the armature out and measures from shaft to commutator. I am going to check wiring over again see if anything there. I was still at the starter as the problem
