Cub Cadet LTX1050

I do a little small engine yard equipment repair now that I'm retired.

Feller brought me a Cub Cadet LTX1050 Hydro to look at.

No go forward or reverse, and when the "clutch" is let out so the belt is turning the input shaft to the trans, it makes the most gosh awful scraping sound. Pressing on the pedals will get a little juddering, but no movement.

Based on that, I'm guessing something major has let go in the trans. I can turn the fan by hand and it feels alright (no immediate evidence of a broken shaft or a nasty bearing) but at engine speed it's really ugly.

The feller said "I need it fixed no matter how much it costs" (yeah...right...) but I'd like to give him something a little more definite than "the transmission is broke".

Can someone give me an idea of what to look at and whether or not the trans is rebuildable or even worth rebuilding? Might start looking around for a used unit if that's worth messing with?

IF it was in our shop, we would get a new transaxle for it.

From the outside, you can't really tell what is wrong. Actually, in some cases with hydro components the problem is wear and only detectable if you know what to look for. (.005 or .010 wear between the piston rotor and the wear plate can make a bit difference in how the transmission performs.) So you can take it apart and look inside, I guess. If there is nothing obvious, then he would still need a new transaxle.

The other thing is that at our labor rate, by the time we replace all the internals we question and get it back together, the customer is usually pretty near the cost of a new transaxle anyway.

Thanks. That's pretty much the conclusion I came to.

I'm gonna get in touch with him today. My sources for a new one are around $850, is that about right?

If he goes that way, he'll have nearly $1,000 in a machine that can be replaced with a new one for around $1700. Doesn't make sense to me, but we'll see what he says.

Yes, replacement cost of the entire unit is always a consideration when making repairs on small equipment.
