Surging on onan engine

What causes this p 218 onan in a jd 318 to surg I had the top half of carb cleaned thorny then I mowed grass when idled it down it started surging again it ran perfect while mowing what did I forget to do any ideas out there

That can be caused by a number of things. A weak gov. spring. Carb needed adjustment clogged air cleaner. Or a carb that still has a clogged passage way

Surging is often a result of a lean mixture, so anything that might reduce the fuel flow or increase the air volume should be suspect. This assuming the governor linkage is set properly to OEM specs, sometimes people get creative and attempt to adjust the linkage.

Another thing is switch to Hi-Test gas and then adjust the carb to it. Makes a really BIG difference. Generators go crazy if you use regular. They start hunting all over the place. Give it a try.

I think the P218 has the same intake manifold as my B48, if it does - spray a little WD40 along the seam while it's idling and it'll smooth out.....those seams tend to leak. Let me know if you have this type of intake manifold......now I'm curious.

there is an idle jet tube that needs to
be removed and cleaned.
it is the most common cause of surging
with the Nikki carb.that your engine has.

you the page from the parts manual that shows the location.

I have a P218 and a P220 and have had that trouble with both of them, think it's an idle air bleed plugged in the carb. top. I've had good luck taking the top off the air cleaner and the plastic baffle off the carb. top and spraying carb cleaner around the top and blowing it out with air, careful, gas is going to fly.

Hello ray I did that on I used carb cleaner and it didn't make any difference in it running I just wonder if there is another jet on the bottom half of the carb thats plugged up

The intake manifolds are famous for leaking, I have one right now that surges all of the time.
