John Deere D110 Starting problem

I am helping a buddy of mine trouble shoot his John Deere D110 Lawn Tractor. His tractor just quit turning over one day. When the key is turned to the start position, there is a one click sound coming from the solenoid. The battery is fully charged. The starter wants to turn over when it clicks once, but it doesn?t. I am getting a little over 8.5 volts coming from the starter side of the solenoid. Do you guys think that it is the solenoid or could it be something going on with the starter? Thanks for any help or suggestions, Jack

I would start tapping on the starter first and then the solenoid and see if that doesn't make something happen. Most likely the starter has toasted if the solenoid is making noise though. Hope this helps.

According to tractor data this mower has a 19 hp single cylinder Briggs. If this is true, a valve adjustment may be needed, .006 clearance. Turn the engine by hand to make sure the starter gear is not hung on the flywheel. I am not a fan of tapping on the starter. You said battery was fully charged. Is it 12.5 volts or above ? If not, it needs to be. You should be getting at least 10.5 volts on the starter side of the solenoid while trying to start. Also check battery cable ends for good connection. Especially where the negative grounds to the engine or frame.

First thing with tapping on the starter is you will break the magnets! Had the same problem last year and just go chance the solenoid. The copper washers inside of it are shot. Cheep built parts. Not that big of a job. Check all of your connections too.

The starter WILL be toasted if you beat on it with a hammer! It breaks the field magnets. They are not windings any more.

To everyone, Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I talked to a Dealer and shared the problem, and he said that starting with a new solenoid would be a less expensive place to start. We put that on and it turns a little bit farther than before, but would not complete one revolution. If I rotate the flywheel with my hands to a certain point and try to start the engine it will go about 1 ? revolutions and stop. I also pulled the spark plug out and it turns over freely. I talked with another Dealer and he mentioned that John Deere might be doing a recall for these 19 hp Briggs engines because of the Automatic Decompression Valve. I am charging the battery not to make sure that it has a good charge on it. I would welcome any thoughts that you may have up to this point. Jack

I am not aware of any recall on those engines. If it was in my shop I would adjust the valves. Most times that takes care of starting if the battery and starter are good. (and the engine is OK otherwise. Best look at a manual before you start, the procedure is more involved than most.

I have seen some cams go flat, though. Most times it was on engines that never had the oil changed.

if the valves are out of adjustment. The decompression feature won't work. Adjust the valves and all will be well.
