Rear wheel movement John Deere 212

My 1978 John Deere 212 has developed movement on the left rear wheel. It feels just like when a car or truck front wheel bearing isn't adjusted tight enough -- when I grip the tire and wiggle it I get slight movement side to side and top to bottom. There's no adjustment on the Deere. The wheel lugs are tight, and the hub is tight on the axle. I suspect an outer bearing (outer edge of bearing in the axle trumpet). If it's a bearing and not something worse in the transaxle, is it a DIY job? I have tons of tools, jacks, etc., and a lot of mechanical experience. I just don't want to get into an unfamiliar project and make it worse than it already is. What advice do you have?

You can probably see if there is a breakdown on that transaxle on the Deere website.

If it is, there should be part numbers. I would suggest call your local dealer to see if the bearing (and possibly the axle) and the seal and gasket(s) are still available. While looking at the breakdown, see if it is something you want to tackle. Be advised that on a 30+ year old tractor, you will probably find other things in the transmission that need attention.

If you relate easy and quick, this is probably not going to be a Saturday afternoon job.

It's not that difficult to change the bearing out.
There should be a write-up on the Weekend Freedom Machines website.
If not, I can walk you through it.
