Fuel shutoff placement

I am thinking of placing a fuel shutoff on my Troybilt 22 hp Intek motor. Should it be between the fuel tank and the fuel pump or between the carb and fuel pump?

Between the tank and the pump. That way the fuel pump never puts pressure on it if you forget to turn on the fuel and try to start the engine

Before the fuel filter. That way when you change the fuel filter, you can just use the shutoff and not have to pinch the line off.

McMaster Carr has "mini ball valves" that I use for fuel shutoffs on anything I am working on. They are available in NPT sizes from 1/8 to 1/2 inch I think and in different male and female combinations, cost only about $6. I stock thee in different sizes so I always have one handy, replacing it next time I order something else. Look them up on line.
