Kohler k301-eating coils like a buffet

Hello! I have a kohler k301 in a ingersol 222. Lately it has been going through ignition coils about every 2 hours of service. I have tried cheap ones and i have tried premium ones (all internally resisted) and it does not seem to make a difference. Has anyone a clue what could be wrong? or even where to start looking for problems?

Set timing with a light, as point gap controls timing and dwell.

IMHO, genuine Kohler coils seem to be the best, as I suspect dwell and primary resistance may be different than coils made for automotive use. (But I've been "called out" for saying that more than once on here.)

Also, are you SURE the coils are failing and there's not a poor connection or other issue in the ignition system that gets temporarily "fixed" when you change out a "bad" coil?

Not familiar with that engine. Does it use battery or magneto ignition?

If its battery ignition, check system voltage when running. It shouldn't be more than 15.5v.
If you are witnessing a sputtering misfire problem, (runs, but not right and maybe worse the longer it runs) change the wire between the points and coil. I've seen 2 bad ones in the last 3-4 years.

You have changed the condenser, haven't you.

You are running a non-resistor plug wire, aren't you?

As stated by others, the Kohler coil is different from automotive coils. I have never found that an automotive coil will stay working on these engines. Also as stated, replace condenser, and read the supply voltage at the coil while running. If this voltage is too low (should be at least 12v as I recall) the secondary voltage will also be lower and the engine will not run properly.

The Shmunk:

Generally speaking, situations like these have discovered people are using cheap aftermarket Ignition Coils. Try using a genuine Kohler Coil. Make sure it is mounted and wired correctly.

Well, after a couple of tests, i figured out that it was over-charging (24 volts wide open) Put a new regulator on it with an extra ground wire (as advised in the installation instructions) and so far after 2 mowings i havent had a problem.
