The original subject was "Re: power steering on a JD300 or 316".

An old forum but I've recently acquired a nice ol JD 300 and wanted to run my idea for power steering past you folks:

I thought of using the front aux hydraulic ports to power a cylinder to steer the tractor.....yes I'd steer it with the inside hydraulic lever. I'm betting it's been done and would be happy to hear any cons about my plan!!

Well, the first thing is if the engine stalls, you won't be able to steer the tractor. If it has oil in the system, the hydramotor under the steering wheel on like a 318 will turn the wheels even when the engine is off.

I don't know if Deere uses a priority valve in there or not, but under heavy load your steering may become sluggish.

If it was me, and I really wanted power steering I would try to get the parts off a 318 and do it right.
