Intex engine

Hello
I have a craftman lawn mower with a 18HP Intex single cyclinder engine.
My question is what causes it to backfire when trying to start it.

You need lots more information. How old or how many hours. Does it start nice and smooth or does it go raaaaaUH, raaaaUH when you try to start. If it does not start smoothly most likely your valves are out of adjustment and this makes it so the compression release cannot work. It should spin like a kids top! Let us see what some other folk say. Not a hard job to do but you DO need to know what you are doing.

Either a weak battery or else the valves need adjusting.

Just thought: It could be also a sticking intake valve (especially if you are trying to burn last year's gas) or carbon keeping the intake valve from sealing.
