Cheaper alternative BS oil filter.

Going by memory as my mower is still buried in the shed, most of the snow has melted so I will get it out soon. As I recall, it is the same oil filter as my wife's PT cruiser, which in a Fram is a PH3614, or if you have enough room for the longer filter it is a PH3600. Obviously anything that crosses to the Fram in a different brand will work. Again, I am going by memory, but pretty sure that is what I use on a 16 hp Briggs single cylinder. I have been using the Fram on it for about 3 seasons now with no problems, and it is a heck of a lot cheaper than the Briggs filter.

My Grasshopper with a Kohler also uses the same as the PT Cruiser,my Woods also took the same filter, have used them for at least 10 years now.

Geentlemen, Back in the day I remember an oil filter unit you could buy from J.C. Whitney and Co. that used a roll of toilet paper for the filter. It worked fantastic too!!! Bought one for an old flat head Ford I had and the ffilter followed me through 4 more cars and finally to a Case backhoe. See if you can find one still. Check the web and Whitney; works on any engine that would use an external filter.

I use that PH 3614 on both of my Onans, one of them has over 1600 hrs. on it and hasn't blown yet.

Posted about a PH8a filter you can also use a PH16. About 3/8 of an inch shorter and they work perfectly for Gravely machines cause you can get them on and off better without spilling oil all over the place. For the Commanders, Briggs, and Kawi engines I use the NAPA listed in their book and this is supposed to be a Wix filter. I cut a used filter open and there IS more element in the Wix when you compare it to a Fram.

There is a short and tall filter that works on Briggs & Kohler. I like the tall better than the short and not that much difference in price and all I use are the NAPA or Wix.

Geo, Motorcraft 400/400s as I recall. Napa 1348/ Wix 51348. There is a longer one that I use on the Kohler, much easier to remove. Tom

I replaced the pan gasket in my Snapper and found out the filter is a bypass filter. It just sucks the dirty oil from the pan. Runs it through the filter and dumps the oil back into the pan. Now,I just drain the oil out of the old filter and reuse it. My Snapper is now 15 -20 years old. Does not smoke or use oil.I have only replaced the filter once.Still has the original engine.

By just dumping the oil in oil filter and reusing the oil filter the media of the filter still had the dirt and what ever else its caught in the media. If the oil filter media gets full it won't filter the oil and some of the filters with paper media will start to fall apart with age.

One thing to remember just because it looks the same and threads on does not mean they have the correct micron ratings as they are supposed to.
We carry the USA made aftermarkets sourced from original oem suppliers as well as Genuine filters for B&S and Kohler

Filters are cheap and generally $12 or less so for me OEM or USA aftermarkets are the only way to go of course thats my opinion.

I seen and heard many things but this is the first time I ever heard of someone reusing a oil filter!
