I try getting the 444 running , when it's going { around half throttle } it seems to be under a load doesn't seem right ... slow down and it either dies or back fires ... while running I took the air cleaner off .. and there seem to be a fine miss of gas blowing OUT { this isn't right is it ?? }
I got a small engine guy down and he's puzzle , we are pretty sure the engine has never been apart , I'm thinking ... could it be the CARB. { it is new .. but who knows now days if it's 100% } or thinking again .. could the key in the flywheel be twisted a little ..... throwing it out of time a little ...
I really don't want to take the motor out , if I don't have too ...

ANY ideas ????? ........... puzzled ..mark

Mark, just a thought- it looks like you have a hydraulic PTO hookup on the back. The hydraulic hose has to be connected to the other hydraulic coupler on the valve, or the pump output will be blocked and stall the engine. If you have experience with these tractors, you already are familiar with this. Just thought I would mention it in case you are new to Case GT's.

if there is a mist of gas blowing out the carburetor one of two things are probably wrong. The intake valve is not seating due to lack of clearance to tappet and/or it needs grinding to make it seat properly. The second thing could be that you are slightly out of time. The first one is what I would check first unless some one has had the engine apart or the flywheel key was partially sheared. Gene Davis

Flywheel key doesn't effect timing on Kohler K's. They have points operated by a push rod off the camshaft.

My money is on either a sticky stem, carbon holding valve off its' seat or misadjusted valve.

Try running a good dose of your favorite fuel system cleaner thru it under a good load. That may free a sticky valve.

Going with your thought take a look at Utube where the guy sees how well Sea mist, foam, whatever and it worked very well.

I agree with the guy who says its the intake valve leaking. You need to check the valve clearance, (I am thinkng .007-.009 intake and .017-.019 exhaust)if its o.k, you may need to take the head off and see if there is carbon interfering with the valve closing.

You may also have to disconnect the drive to the pump until you get most of the engine problems sorted out.

THANKS to all that gave advice .... I'm going to check the valve clearance .. then go from there ...but right now I need to do some work on the yard ... so 444 goes on back burner for awhile ..not lone

THANKS again ............... mark

If this tractor is equipped with the optional rear PTO valve and the control lever is in the neutral position or the hydraulic hose is looped back to the valve, then there is no real load on the engine to circulate the oil and therefore......no need to separate the engine from the pump.

I think that this is a lack of maintenance issue. The head should be removed so that the entire combustion chamber can be de-carbonized, including the underside of the valves. The valve lash should be set along with the points gap. The whole area under the cowling and cooling tins should be carefully cleaned to remove any nests or other debris. Once you are positive that the valves are seating properly and that the correct clearances are in place, I think that your problem with fuel spray and backfiring will go away.

Buy a can of Seafoam from your local NAPA dealer and read the instructions. This stuff works.

Tom ,
YES it has the back pto valve and the hose is a loop and the valve is in neutral ... I bought this 444 in pcs and the motor and pump where together ... he had it apart for 2 years before he sold it to me .. I got it in Oct 2014 and been working on painting and getting it together since ...

So Tom , I do agree with you on everything you said I should do ... just right now it is getting yard and garden work so I have to work on the 444 when possible { I work 9 hours a day too } ..

I appreciate EVERYONES advice ....... THANKS ........ mark

Ps... Should I put sea foam in the oil or the gas ??? ... or both ???

jUST A SIDE NOTE: MR. ARNOLD IS NOT ENTIRELY CORRECT, SEA FOAM IS A GREAT, GREAT PRODUCT!!! I USED IT IN A FROZEN ENGINE! PUT A LITTLE IN SPARK PLUG HOLE AND ABOUT A CUP OR LITTLE LESS IN CRANKCASE. LET IT SIT TWO DAYS BINGO! ENGINE RUNS!!! GREAT FOR FREEING UP STUCK RINGS TOO. GO AHEAD AND ADD A BIT TO YOUR CRANKCASE IT WON'T HURT AT ALL.
