JD318 clutch shuts off.

The first time that I mowed a week ago, the deck PTO on my JD318 quit after 2 hours. Yesterday it quit after 45 minutes. Do I need to replace the clutch. My tractor has the original Onan engine...............DY

Hi dy we have same trouble u can regap the 3 set screws at .016 to .020 if that don't help u will have to buy a new coil which is the bottom half of clutch cost about 140.00 good luck

Most common causes:
low battery voltage, check battery and charging system.

air gap too wide. Adjust the clutch clearance.

could be a bad coil but usually if they fail, it just doesn't work at all.

Like others said, check your charging system. If the battery is running down, it can cause the clutch to slip and destroy it!

Also if you can catch it in the act, have a test light ready and when it fails immediately check for power to the clutch, at the clutch where the wire plugs together. Could be a bad switch, broken wire making intermittent connection, corroded connection.

Thanks guys! The battery has been low so maybe the charging system is the problem. I have a volt/ohm meter but I'm not sure how to trouble shoot the generator....................DY
