JD LX 188 Not Charging

Hi all,

I normally work on the bigger, older stuff, however I am having a charging issue with my 1993 JD LX 188. The Voltage light is on, but i have not yet confirmed it with a voltmeter. It does have a new battery this spring. How does the charging system on these Kawasaki V-twin liquid cooled motors work? Where should i look for issues?

Thanks

Chuck McDonald

I don't know what you are capable of mechanically, but If it was in my shop, I would connect a jumper wire from the single terminal on the voltage regulator to the battery positive post.
Connect a voltmeter set to DC between the battery posts and start the engine.
If it reads over 12.6-Ideally (over 13 to about 14.5 volts: 15 or more is too much!)The no charge problem is in the wiring on the machine.

If it still reads 12.6 or below, Then with the engine off, set your voltmeter to AC and start the engine and back probe each side of the 2 pin connector on the regulator. This checks the stator under the flywheel. I am thinking output should be a bit over 30v AC. If you get no voltage, either the stator is fried or else the magnets in the flywheel have broken free and are now stuck to the poles on the stator. If you get a little over 30v from the stator, you need a new regulator.
