Gravely 8122 transmission noise

Hello, I have a bearing howling type of noise, it seems to be coming right from behind the engine (kohler), with the pto off and not turning. It is loud with just the engine idling and sitting still. If any of the board members could maybe point me in the right direction as to which bearing may be suspect like which gears turn at idle and the tractor not moving, Etc. I would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Donald.... P.S. the trans was run about half full for a few days of mowing....

Another thing on Gravely machines is they are gear drive. Now I have the old walk behind machines and when you pull the engine there is a gear on there and a ring type affair inside. That gear on the engine will sing when worn. If you did a lot of mowing with low oil. No smile face. I check my machines EVERYtime I use them. Just pull the dip stick out.

Yea my old 430 commercial rider has a dip stick. I never start it without checking it. The darned 8122 has a fill plug, with no dip stick. does any know if you can add a dip stick that would really help.

Is your machine a walk behind? If it is you can add a dipstick. There is a factory bulliten on how to do it. What you can do is install a 1/8 pipe petcock in the front level plug's hole and that is how you can check the oil level like an old tractor. Do yourself a favor and check out Gravely Tractor Club of America. Their web sigh has tons of information and every manual ever printed.

Check the bearing on forward clutch . Best to replace both forward & reverse bearing when working on it. BUT you could just pull the seal cover on bearing & grease replace seal to check. I have found those clutch bearings last about 7 -10 years. Also drain & install new 10w/30 in that trans see if any metal comes out check with magnet.
