case 155 kohler k241A (problem number 5,0000 lol)

alright yall, I got a case 155 and it has the 10 HP kohler 241a and I have no idea how to set the gap on the points. I know it needs to be set to .020, but I have no Idea how to. Any help is much appreciated.
 
Hi, on the side of the engine with the carb on the lower left is the points cover has a screw at the top and one at the bottom remove the 2 screws and carefully remove the cover try not to break the gasket and at the bottom left will be the wire going to the coil slip it and its rubber seal out, you now see the points. it you go to the Kohler wedsite you can download a manual for the engine.

Instead of "KNOWING" (incorrectly) that, why not download the factory service manual and set the points as directed to correctly set spark timing?

Here is how you do it, have a set of those points in my hand. Just below the top point mounting screw on the right and behind the stationary point is another screw perpendicular to the mounting screw. Beside that is a small round hole with a slot. loosen the screw a little but not completely, put a screwdriver in the hole with the slot in the side of it, the lower part of the blade in the other slot in the stationary point. Now with the adjusting screw somewhat loose you can, by twisting the screwdriver, move the stationary point to adjust. Don't forget to tighten the screw to hold your adjustment and check the gap again after you do. On my Cub Cadet it is a bi%^h to get to the lower point cover screw. I drilled a 1/2" hole just below the top of the frame and cut out the top of the hole to make a slot. It is nearly impossible to do the job otherwise. Hope yours is easier. Let us know how you make out.
 
because I have already downloaded and read it several times that's how I "know" what the gap is, but I can not fin in the service manual where it tells me HOW to set the gap. but thank you for responding.
 
that help me a lot, thank you very much. mines not really hard at hard to get in and out but I just don't know much about it yet. can you tell me what the amount of risk is of knocking it out time? if there is even a possibly of doing so.
 
you could not get it out of time replacing or adjusting the points. The points are actuated by a small push rod operated from inside the engine. As long as you don't pull the push rod out when you are changing points and not put it back in you are good. And if you did pull it out and put it back in later it would still be in time.
 
Jacob, without trying to tell you what to do, my point was that setting the point gap, as the manual instructs, with a timing light is the EASIEST and MOST accurate way to do it and can have a LARGE effect on how the engine runs.

If timing is too early, spark knock can occur and eventually break the piston, if timing LATE, the engine will run HOTTER than it should.

There's nothing "magic" about the .020" measurement.

The points will be FINE probably through out the range of about .016" to .026", it is FAR more important that the spark timing is correct, and varying the point gap a little under or above the .020" figure is how the timing gets set on this engine.
 
ohh alright, I apologize if I came across angry or anything, I'm just tired of putting money in it nd not having it running yet, my only problem with that is I do not have a timing light. that being said I will do some more research and make sure I have everything the best I can possibly have it.
 
oh okay phew, I just don't want to make it worse than I can actually fix you know? I got to find my filler gauge before I do anything else. thank you for helping me out.
 
You can also set the timing/point gap with an Ohmmeter or battery-powered test light.
 
What Bob said is true,I have broken a piston in 2 right at the ring lands from being not timed right.I was listening to the Cubs on the headset and didn't hear the knock.
