Thought I would check the points and go from there ...

Will at least some of the problem is solved .... the points gap was waaaaaay over , might of been 30 or bigger .. so I shut it down to 20 .. the fuel pump is leaking , so I got a new one coming ...{ suppose to be here Friday } then I will try and set the carb. ... I had it running at a little faster then idle and ran good no backfiring ... at least for the short time I let it run { it's in my shop and cold outside so didn't want to get to much exhaust fumes }

Anyway just wanted to let those that gave advice THANK YOU ... mark

Points to wide cause 2 issues, first that they will not run right at higher RPMs, and will cause the spark to be quite advanced.

I am surprised it did not kick back on starter.

Correct me if I am backward on high/low RPM issue.

Do the engine a favor and follow the info in the service manual using the link I provided and set the points with a timing light as Kohler instructs.

To set the timing, you change the the gap on the points. You will need a good ohm meter or a light. Not a timing light but a Flashlight with continuity tester something that will tell you exactly when the points begin to open. You're on the right track.

David ,
I never try running it full throttle .. when running a little faster than a idle it backfired so I didn't want to try faster speed .....
