Cub Cadet 124

Does anyone have a recommendation on what kind of oil to use in the transmission/rear axle. I know Cub Cadet recommends Hy-Tran but there must be a cheaper solution. This is a manual transmission.

Thanks

I use 80-90 weight gear oil in gearboxes unless there is some reason not to such as it is the hydraulic reservoir.

I Agree use the right oil,, what does a Cub Cadet hold a few quarts or a gallon maybe,,, Hy-Tran prices have went down some now,, think what I got a week or so ago was only 65.xx something for 5 gallons,,, much better than when it was 90.00 something,,, always makes my smile when I see someone talks about how high something is,, if you can't afford a few dollars for the right stuff how did you buy the unit to start with,,, sorry I do not mean to sound rude but I have heard this so much,,, here I have seen ones that talk like this that want to save a buck here on oil then they are at Starbucks every getting one or two coffees a day at 9-10 bucks a cup and think nothing of it,,, get your priority's straight lol

I am going against the grain on this, but for your CC124 I would use either Tractor Supply trans-hydraulic oil (should say replaces Hytran on the jug) or else 80w90 GL1 (Tractor Supply jug says 'for Ford tractors' on it) 90wt is what was used in the full size Farmall Cub tractors for many years. they have basically the Same gearbox except for the input and output shafts.

On a manual transmission go to TSC or even Walmart and buy their "compatible" transhydraulic fluid. If it were a hydrostat I'd tell you to stick with Hytran.
