A number of years ago I posted a question about counterbalance springs on an MTD snowthrower adapted to fit my 18 HP twin Briggs powered Montgomery Wards tractor. A lot of folks said it wouldn't have enough power for a 40" thrower. I was a little confused by this 'cause the factory option was a 36" thrower and I figured another 4" wouldn't make much difference. Strangely enough I haven't had a chance to use it until today (Wasn't here in previous winters and this year haven't had but an inch of snow at a time until today). We had around 10" and I'm glad to say it throws snow like crazy at a pretty good rolling clip. The only issue I have to tackle now it traction. A friend gave me an awesome set of chains but it looks like I'm going to have to get a serious rear counter-weight. I'm wondering now, if I do that will I start to loose steering traction.
