Kohler 10 hp. K241

I have a spare, (parts? ) engine that came with the Cub Cadet 100 that I have been working on. I took the bottom of the engine off to swap with the engine in the tractor as that one has problems with the drain plug threads and it is aluminum and the other one is cast iron. Anyway, in the crankcase was a small piece of steel about 1/8" x 1" x .050" thick. It has a small hole in one end, a place on the other end where something contacted it, a small round shinny spot. There was a small rivet there too that fit the hole. Anyone know what it could be? I don't know what the problem with this engine was, the story was that they had replaced it with the engine in the tractor. It may be OK. I may try and start it someday but I don't have the carb, or another not being used starter generator to put on it so maybe not for a while. Inside it looks OK but I haven't checked the rod bearing for clearance or looked at the cylinder to see if there is a big ridge at the top. Thanks, Tom

Perhaps..... it is the dipper stick that goes on the bottom of the con rod and slams into the oil to keep the engine splash lubed.

No, that's not it, that is cast as part of the rod on both engines, and is not broken off on either. But thanks. I am going to look through my Kohler manual carefully but some of the pictures aren't that clear. Tom

That would be the "flap" or arm from the governor cross shaft. A common failure. Hopefully it is from a prior failure that didnt get cleaned out because it requires almost a total teardown to replace it. It's the first piece in the engine on a total rebuild.

Hope you find the real problem. Someone brought my dad a Cub Cadet a long time ago with an "OIL" problem. He was very careful and checked his oil with the dip stick. He did not run the engine. Good reason too. His two young kids saw him pull the stick and check the oil. Guess they thought they could help dad out. They dumped a couple of hands full of pee gravel down the tube and were just putting the stick back when he caught them!

Thanks Bob! That looks like it. I guess someday I will have to take it apart, fix it and inspect the rest of the engine. Maybe that's why they went with a replacement engine, maybe this one is good too? You never know. Thanks again, Tom
