Engine swap

I have a friend contemplating swapping a K341 in place of a bad KT17. Does anyone know if this is a bolt in swap or one requiring drilling & shimming or not practical at all? Thanks.

I don't think there's a single mounting dimension or "crankshaft height" measurement in common between those two engines, but let's wait to see what the GURUs have to say!

Use a micrometer on shaft size and length. They must match. A lot of newer engines are almost universal. That Kohler is a bit older but might match up. Do the micrometer deal first!

I swapped out my old Kohler for a V twin B&S on a GT17. Found a guy on line out of Indiana that will sell you what you need.
Took the 17 horse out and stuffed in a 22 horse! Blows snow great! Easy job.

just depends how bad you want to do it, i have several used motors out of bad tranny units. whats really bad with the original unit

Just love those Twin V Briggs engines! They run so nicely and have guts. One reason is they have a really heavy fly wheel. The only bug is the carb. on them. They have that NIKI dual carb. It is two in one body. One for each piston. When they work correctly they are fantastic. But when the little itty bitty, teeny tiny, "O" rings on those little brass jets go bad. Just take the carb. apart and replace the jets. Fixed! Part number 117 in the Briggs diagram. Somewhere around $6.oo each. The manifold can also warp behind the carb too so you want to put a little silicone seal behind the gasket. One more, Check the bolts around the engine that hold the top and bottom halfs together. Shop guys take all of them out one at a time and put lock tight or nail polish on them and screw them back in. If they loosen the engine starts peein oil all over the place. Does yours have an oil filter on it? If not you can find your local Lawn mower repair joint and remove the little 1/2 inch pipe from a blown Briggs and put it on yours. That pipe is a straight thread and NOT Pipe thread. Did it on my machine. By the way, that is a $700.oo plus engine.

Ariens used K-341 engines in S-16H tractors which is mery much like the GT-17. Switching to Kohler K341 should not be a problem. It would be best if you had an old Ariens or New Holland tractor for parts.Note the drive shaft connects to flywheel side so matching holes will be needed to connect drive shaft . If you have a flywheel that was on a S-16 Ariens it should be a easy swap.
