Case Lawn/Garden Tractors.

When it comes to these Case yard and garden tractors I'm pretty ignorant. Could someone tell me what the differences are between the 200 series and the 400 series tractors are?

Ground clearance is the difference.

The Lo Pro 200 Series tractors have 12" diameter rims on the rear. The Big Wheel 400 Series use a 16" diameter rim.

The Lo Pro uses a different front axle and spindles than the Big Wheel in order to level out the tractor.

The Lo Pro has about 7 inches of ground clearance at the back axle's gear case compared to 11 inches for the Big Wheel model.

I wonder why they made the two different ground clearances? Are the Kohler single cylinder engines balanced well? The few experiences I had with any riding mower with a single cylinder engine shook pretty bad. I did overhaul a Briggs and Stratton engine for a neighbor that came out of an Allis Chalmers rider. This was a cast iron case engine that had counter balance weights. It ran really smooth.

These tractors began life as a product from the Colt Manufacturing Company. CASE bought Colt in late 1964 and continued producing the two existing lines of tractors, both of which sold very well. So..why mess with a good thing? If the public wants both styles, then the smart thing to do is to listen to your customers.

All vertical single cylinder engines vibrate at one RPM point or another. Engines used in Case tractors prior to 1973 came with counter balance gears that helped with the vibration issue at idle, where it
was most notable. All of those tractors had the engine hard mounted to the frame. In 1973, CASE introduced tractors with four isolator pucks that were supposed to help with the vibration and the engines
did not have the balance gears because those have been known to grenade and destroy the engine totally.

If you don't like vibration, then the horizontally opposed Onan twins will make you happier but even they are not perfect. I have both and can tell you that I was happy driving either tractor.

Thanks for the information Tom. The 446 I was looking at must have sold. It's not on Craig's list any longer. There is a 224 listed that doesn't look too bad, but would rather have a tall wheel model. I'll keep looking.

You shouldn't shed a single tear over that 446. Be patient. There are much better tractors out there. It's early days at the moment. When the snow starts melting, the market changes.

I have both as well, depending on what I am doing I like both the low wheel and high wheel units, I will say for 90% of jobs the low wheel units do very well, a few of mine at work last summer

Look's like you put your Case's to good use. How many different attachments do you have for your line up?

lets see, mower decks, dozer blades, tillers, snow blowers a 540 PTO unit, a Brinley plow, Brinley tandem disc, a CASE cab for the 400 series,,, think that is all

I bought a really nice 446 last fall, with a tiller and mower deck. I do not plan on using the deck, as I have a zero turn that does most of the work. I think I will be looking for a muffler before too long. Come on Spring, I can't wait to get it out of the garage.

Hi, I have a 446 ,with the big 16 inch rears, when it comes to pushing snow with its 54 inch blade, it works very well , and it pulls
an old horse drag through the garden no problem , the down side of these older case tractors prior to 1985 is that that it freewheels down hills
then also 2 different frame lengths , then when Ingersoll took over they flipped the engine 180 degrees which the front implement are driven on the opposite side
also onan parts are crazy high . Looking back I kinda wish I had gotten a Simplicity Powermax

I have 4 Case GT's. 2 large frames and 2 smaller. Love them ! All have Kohler power.
IMO, the best is a 444, big wheels and Kohler engine. Adequate hp. Anything larger has a
Onan.
