Is your favorite hobby splitting wood................or do you prefer to get that job done as fast as possible?

As you can see by the video, the CASE splitter will cut your time almost in half because you don't waste time waiting for the ram to reset. Just flip the log to the opposite side and split it again. If you try one of these splitter's you won't use one from any other company. The one in the video is the best model out of the four that Case offered because it tows behind the tractor and has its own valve. These routinely bring $500.00 to $1000.00 depending upon location and condition. There is one model that splits only one way and it bolts to the rear of the tractor. There is also a CAT 0 three point hitch model but you do not see that one very often.

Keep in mind that the CASE garden tractor was always a PREMIUM machine with a price that was commensurate with the quality and engineering. Today, a BASIC big wheel INGERSOLL tractor will cost you $8000.00. Then you pick the attachments and optional equipment. When shopping for one of these tractors, you have to be careful. Actually I can't go out and cut/split firewood anymore. I just thought the splitter in the video looked handy. I am planning on looking at a 446 with a mower deck that is for sale for $700.00. I've always used Case tractors, and thought it would be nice to own a Case garden tractor. What should I look for when looking at a 446?
 
The 446 began production in 1972 and continued until the 1988 model year came to an end. From 1972 to 1976, they wore Desert Sunset tin over Power Red frame and undercarriage. From 1977 to 1983, they were Power Red with Power White rims. For one year, 1984 they had black frames and undercarriage, Power Red tin and a white Naugahyde seat. The rims were Power White and so were all the attachments for that year. Then they went back to Power Red in 1985 and continued until 1988.

The most important issue is the Onan engine condition. You would be wise to conduct a Leak Down Test and a Compression Test on any tractor you are considering. Costs to PROPERLY rebuild an Onan can range up to 2 grand. A tractor with a blown Onan is only worth 200 bucks for parts. So focus on the engine. Do not believe Hour Meters. Do not believe what Sellers tell you. If they say the engine has been rebuilt, make them prove it by showing you the invoices for the machine shop work and the new parts. Anything else pales compared to the engine issue.

Obviously, your eyes will tell you a lot about how a tractor has been treated or mistreated by the Seller. Look for hydraulic leaks, torn seats, faded paint, missing decals, over-spray, missing control knobs, PTO clutches that won't stay engaged, bent steering components and butchered wiring harnesses.

I gave you a link to a site where there are almost 2000 reviews of actual tractors that came up for sale over the past two years on Craigslist, Kijiji, Uncle Henry's and e-Bay. Educating yourself prior to looking for a tractor is the best way to make sure you don't get shafted.
 

Is the $2000.00 engine repair parts and labor? I've rebuilt a lot of engines in my time, so the labor would be no problem.

This tractor is over two hours away from me, so I doubt I'll have time to do a leak down test on the cylinders. The add states that it's a 1975 model and has the desert sunset hood, which looks like it has been repainted. The rest of the tractor looks alright, but that's just looking at the pictures. I'll have to look it over good if I travel up there to look at it. I'm also go to look for one closer to home, if there is any.

Pay close attention to what Tom said about the Onan. If anything his prices are a bit dated and low, certainly not high. You really do not want to get into one of them. Parts prices are just plain ridiculously high, no other way to explain it and the aftermarket has not stepped in as they have with Kohler. A tractor with a good Onan is easily worth $1000 more than one with known engine problems and as he said the main reason why Case and Ingersoll tractors get parked, actually very close to the only reason. The other reason in this day and age to dislike the Onan is fuel usage, if you intend to run it a lot of hours they will eat your lunch.

As for the attachments the quality is certainly there. Unfortunately for us who desire them the demand is also there so unless you prudently shop you will pay the price for about anything other than mower decks and push blades. Usually it is best to buy a complete set up if you can find one because you get all the required bits and pieces. The way Case did things there can be a LOT of modifications to a bare tractor to add say a tiller, or the splitter, depends on how he tractor was ordered.
 
Butch has touched on the area of attachments and options so I will flesh that out.

Case and Ingersoll sold the basic tractor. All it would do is tow things, nothing more.

If you wanted to grade dirt/gravel or plow snow...then you ordered the Utility Blade. Used blades today cost $400.00 or less...depending upon condition.

If you wanted to blow snow, then a used snow caster in decent condition can be had for less than $400.00 - again depending upon condition.

There were two types of implement hitches available as an option. The Sleeve Hitch was the most popular and I have seen many of them sell for under $200.00.

The CAT 0 three point hitch costs more. The earlier H or J 26 Series hitch currently sells for around $450.00 as a used item. The newer HH34 hitch can bring as much as $600.00.

In order to POWER the various hydraulic attachments offered by Case or Ingersoll, you need a REAR PTO KIT and those often sell for around $200.00 as a complete unit.

The hydraulic rotary tiller in good condition rarely sells for less than $400.00 and as much as $600.00

These are the most popular attachments, other than the mowing decks.

But CASE and Ingersoll also offered a 48 inch finishing mower to fit on the 3 point hitch that was hydraulically powered.

There is also a 48" Bush Hog style field mower that is hydraulically powered.

At one time, you could buy a hydraulically powered Chipper/Shredder made for Ingersoll by McKissic who makes the best chipper/shredders.

Also available are the Hydra-Bagger and the Hydra-Vac. Both are hydraulically powered and designed to vacuum up everything the mower deck spits out.


CASE and Ingersoll used Onan engines in the 446, 448, 4016, 4018 and 4020 models. But the strict emission laws killed the Onan around 2000. From that point on, Ingersoll was forced to drop the Onan and the Kohler M Series engines that had served their customers so well for 35 years. When it comes to raw torque, both engines deliver it in gobs. The Vanguard Series from Briggs And Stratton became the replacement for the Onan and the Kohler. Some 446 and 448 owners have opted to install Vanguard engines instead of rebuilding their Onan. There is mixed opinion regarding the wisdom of that decision. I for one... prefer the Onan over the Vanguard.

Now if you decide that you would rather stay away from an Onan powered Case, then choose the mighty 444 model with the 14 HP K-321AS engine. The difference of 2 HP is barely noticeable but the smoothness of the horizontally opposed Onan twin is very evident when talking about vibration.

I completely agree with Butch when he advises you to look for a big package instead of buying a basic tractor and then adding the options and the attachments. It is far smarter to OVERBUY and sell of what you do not need than it is to under-buy and end up spending more time and more money chasing down what you do need.

The trick here is to figure out first what you want the tractor to do for you because that will dictate what you need in the way of options and attachments. I did not touch on things such as holding valves, wheel weights, front counter weights, tire chains, Flow Control Valves, winter cabs and so forth. All of those things get thoroughly discussed on my forum in order to better prepare you to make a wise decision the first time instead of suffering from Buyer's Remorse.
 
Dont let all of our talk about the Onan and attachments talk you out of the ownership experiance!
The learning curve with these tractors and attachments is quite steep but they are worth learning about if you avoid making big mistakes in purchasing. We have 3 Ingersoll tractors and one Case in our family and almost enough attachments (you cant ever have enough attachments, LOL)
 
I own three Case/Ingersolls, a 222, a 224 and a 446, two Kohler powered and one Onan powered. The 446 with the Onan is by far the smoothest and best running of the three. With out a doubt Onans are expensive to rebuild and you take a chance buying a used tractor not knowing how the previous owner maintained it. A good test would be to do a compression and leak down test and also general appearance will indicate how well the tractor was maintained. I lucked out with mine. When I got it I pulled all of the tins and flywheel off and cleaned it up and also did a de-carbon job and rebuilt the carburetor. Nothing I did showed lack of maintenance by the previous owner. If I had to do engine work I would definitely re-build the Onan. No way would I replace it with another brand of engine. Then again I am a purist and believe most re-engined tractors regardless of brand are hack jobs which ruin the functionality and value of the tractor. Tom Arnold is by far the most knowledgeable person there is regarding the Case/Ingersoll tractors and attachments. His website, hydriv.ca, will prove it and is well worth the small membership fee. casecoltingersoll.com is another good site. A good source of parts is onanparts.com and boomersonanparts.com. My two cents for what it's worth.
