won't start troubleshooting

I have a 1967 John Deere 112. It decided to quit running yesterday, stalled, and then would not crank over. I've eliminated the battery and ignition switch. The battery is new (today) and I took a working ignition swtich out of another 112 and still nothing. When I turn the key I get the generator light to come but when I turn the key to start I get nothing. I'm fortunate enough to have another running 112 in the garage (well, it runs most of the time) so I can swap out parts to eliminate them as needed. I'm not real good at troubleshooting electrical, just hope it's something simple. The engine turns over easily by hand. Where do I look next? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Terry

If you have a jumper cable touch one end on the + terminal on the battery and the other end on the terminal on the starter. Hal

OK, when I connected the positive battery terminal to the starter (small wire terminal), it doesn't spin the motor, it makes some noise?? I had the key turned to on, but not to start. Went back out and turned the key to start and now it's turning over without jumping it. So, for the time being I guess it's back to normal, must have freed something up. These old round fenders keep me scratching my head. Thanks!!!

Check you battery connections at both ends of both pos and neg cables, check for corrosion at the wires on the solenoid. What you describe sounds like either corrosion some where or a solenoid starting to go.

Need to make sure the safety switches are working properly. You have 1 on the transmission shifter and 1 on the pto switch. could be a faulty solenoid also.

Like Mark said , I forget over the winter and can't start it in the spring. Don't think it has a PTO saftey switch tho. Gives the grandsons something to giggle about.
