I've got a used kt17s engine that runs but needs overhauled. It's out of a 782 cub cadet. A friend is interested in it. He intends to use it in a pulling garden tractor. He acts like it might be a fairly desireable engine. I don't know what it might be worth. I wondered if anyone on here might have an idea. thanks

How do you know that it can be overhauled? If the bores are currently at 30 over, then the block would have to be sleeved. The point here is this. Buying a worn engine is a crap shoot and therefore you would be foolish to gamble more than $100.00 for a complete one. Others may agree and others may differ but that is my opinion. At the very least, your engine will need NEW pistons, rings, wrist pins, con rods, the crank turned, new bearings, the camshaft profiled, the block bored, resurfacing of the head and block, new valve springs, new guides, new valves, valve seats cut, new governor gear, carb rebuild, new plugs, points, high tension wires, condenser, gaskets and probably a few things I have missed.

sell used motors all time 40.00 to 75.00 no matter brand or type as long as it was running whem mower was disassembled. just can't afford to much in used engines anymore

To be honest anything you can get out of it will be a plus. Knowing it needs an overhaul I'm very surprised your friend wants it - unless he doesn't know what an overhaul for one of them costs. The KT17 is VERY EXPENSIVE to overhaul - anything over $20 on a worn out one would be pure profit. If you got $100 I wouldn't plan on him being your friend very long.

thanks guys for the comments. I didn't have a clue what it might be worth. I guess not a heck of a lot.
