My ford 12 hp hydro seems to whine a lot. Is there a filter that can be changed? If so where is it located?. I does work ok forward and backwards. Thanks. It is a 1973 model

I have a '72 LGT-125 that I bought over thirty years ago.
I never had a mower deck on it but I use it with a 4' sickle bar and a HD 48" blade with which I plow a lot of snow and use for grading as well.
This thing has always whined.....I just figured it was "the nature of the beast" and keep on using it.
Mine has a spin-on filter readily visible on the LH side under the Hydro pump but I've never changed it as the fluid has always looked nice and clean.
I hope some others "chime in" as I would be interested as to whether or not they have the same experience.

The hydro filter is a spin-on unit and should be clearly visible attached to the transaxle.

Filter # is WIX 51307 or equivalent.

Had a chance to look it over. It looks like a oversized fuel filter with a line going into each end. About 5 inches long and 2.5 in around. Cleaned with a rag and the one end had IN stamped on it. Kinda think that may be it. On the front of the trans.

It's actually attached to tubing [u:1cfbf6fd3c]between[/u:1cfbf6fd3c] the transaxle and the hydro pump.
Fram PH16 will also work. Baldwin 233,163 or B34. Ford FL-300 or, if you want extra capacity, a Ford FL1A will work and give more volume and a little more cooling. It is basically the filter used on many Mopar engines including the 3.9 V-6.

(quoted from post at 00:55:29 12/29/15) Thanks for the replies and #s. I will check them out.

My response was being typed as you were typing so I did not have the information about the type of filter you were describing which is nothing like any automotive spin-on oil filter. The filter you describe, according to the parts manual, applies to tractors mfgd. in 1979 and after. The Ford (Jacobsen) part number for it is JAC-130355. I guess, if still available, you would have to obtain it from a New Holland or Jacobsen dealer.

JAC-130355 crosses to WIX 51307, a commonly available filter that nearly any auto parts store can order either in the WIX brand or cross it to their brand.

Oh, yeah, the very same number I posted earlier.

Be sitting down when you price the filter. Last I knew, New Holland want $160 for it. It can be converted to spin on if you find a later parts tractor. Jacobsen used to offer a conversion kit due to the expense of that filter.

Actually, the number I gave you was for the spin-on filter (my mistake) the odd filter is part #JAC-121675 although the parts manual is a little hazy on that as well as the years it was used.
Sprint 6 posted about it's high cost which is presumably because of it's uniqueness.
Again, my LGT-125 is a '72 and does have the spin-on filter.

As an aside; my '73 LGT-145 has the "odd" filter, my '77 LGT-165 has the "spin-on" filter and my '83 LGT-165 has the "odd" filter.
Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it!

My '83 LGT 165 has a factory spin on filter and mount. I think the filter difference arises if the tractor has hydraulic lift or not, at least in my experience. What I have seen is manual lift tractors tend to have the in line filter, and hydraulic lift tractors tend to have a spin on.

And yet......all of my tractors have hydraulic lift.....except.....the LGT-125. Go figure!

Thanks again for the replies. I was out all day.so I just checked in. Yes my filter looks like the one in figure #21. My tractor does not have Hyd lift. Going to check out #s and see what I can find out here in S/C Pa.
