Color of Cub Cadet's

I always wondered why IHC painted them yellow and white instead of red? The more I think about it, the less sense it makes. I actually have a red 682 and I like it much better than yellow.

IH began to sub-contract the building of the Cub Cadet line to MTD. The red tractors went only to bona fide IH agricultural dealers. The yellow/white CC's went to all the other dealers that had been selling the CC line for years. This all happened in 1979/80. Only the red ones have an IH insignia. The yellow/white ones just say Cub Cadet.

I am thinking that IH thought the cub cadets would sell better in urban areas where people could buy them to cut grass around their houses, and that is where more of their construction equipment dealers were. So they painted the first CCs to match their construction equipment.

Actually they considered other colors as well, from what I have read. Never offered for sale, but other colors were examined. Kinda like the Deere patio garden tractors.

For a while the regular Cubs were also yellow, I think they wanted them to match. I'm guessing the Cub market had moved towards the industrial camp so they started painting them like the other industrial tractors.

IH introduced the CC "Original" back in 1963 and it was yellow/white. Back then, the CC line was being built at the IH factory but eventually IH began using MTD to build the tractors. However, the tractors were still engineered by IH and carried the IH logo as well as the yellow/white paint scheme. I am not aware of IH ever using a different paint scheme until the decision was made to make the CC garden tractor line match the paint scheme of the IH agricultural tractors. Painting them red, made them fit into AG dealer's product line and that would have appealed to farmers who wanted their garden tractor to look like the new AG tractor they bought.

The year after all this took place, IH found itself in financial trouble and they sold the entire garden tractor division to MTD. That is when MTD took over the design of the CC line and that is when the product went on a slow journey to hell.

Just to clarify, MTD bought the garden tractor division of IH. Production continued in KY for few years until moved to the MTD plants.
