GRASSHOPPER 720K electric clutch

. About 10 years ago I bought this ZTR mower with 300 hrs, but did not get any OP manual. It has worked very well and been very dependable. Now at 1800 hours, the mower deck clutch is beginning to slip under a heavy load. The engine maintains speed, but the deck slows down. My question is- Is the clutch rebuildable? Nowdays, many items are not meant to be repaired but replaced. Has anyone fixed their own electric clutch?

I'm not sure if yours is adjustable or not, some are. Look at bottom and see if there is any bolts that would let you adjust it. Just put a feeler gauge between the discs and adjust to approx. .012. You should be good to go.

With 1800 hours, you probably need a new clutch. If this is a front deck, be sure your problem is the clutch and not belts or worn out pulleys. (Yes, the pulleys do wear to the point they don't grip the belts like they used to.) I see belt failures more often than failed clutches on front deck Grasshoppers. But haven't seen many with as many hours on them yet as yours has.

Also, slipping clutches may have a problem with their coil windings, not providing the pull they once did. A failing clutch coil can take out the engine block and crank if it shorts to the case. Because on all the later clutches the only good path to ground other than the ground wire is through the engine.

All good reasons to get another clutch.

Just to add to what Mtman said, if you are bound and determined to try to repair what you have:

Some of the later clutches have removable shims behind the brake magnets. Look on the side of the clutch and see if the brake tab above the magnets is held on with bolts. If it is, look for shims between the magnets and the main housing.

One thing: This is only a somewhat temporary fix, as it will eventually wear enough to begin failing again.
