Cub Cadet Identification Help

Looking at an old photo from the late 70's. Can anyone tell me the model number and years of production of this Cub Cadet lawn Tractor. As I remember, it was a hydrostat and had about a 16 hp engine. Thanks.

If 16 hp, the model is a 1650. It also had hydrostatic transmission. You can see the hydro lever beside the steering wheel.

Those were darn good machines. I put many an hour on one. The worst part was switching to the snowblower. Mounting things on those was not as easy as today's machines.

Suffolk1:

That is what Cub Cadet referred to as: the Quietline Series.

They were Garden Tractors, not lawn tractors, and were produced from 10/1974 to 09/1979.

The lineup was:

[u:932dde60e0]Gear Drives[/u:932dde60e0]

800 - 8HP
1000 - 10HP
1200 - 12HP

[u:932dde60e0]Hydros:
[/u:932dde60e0]
1250 - 12HP
1450 - 14HP
1650 - 16HP

There was an odd ball, price orientated, model - 1100. It broke away from the traditional Kohler engine and the IH Gear Drive or Sundstrand Hydro Unit. It had an 11HP Briggs & Stratton engine and a Peerless Transaxle. To this day, people still debate on whether the 1100 is a Garden Tractor or a Lawn Tractor.

The lever you see is the hydraulic implement lift. It was a straight lever that came out of the side cowling by your right knee. The knob was missing on ours and it had a golf ball as a knob. By your right foot there was an adjustable cam to control how far the hydraulics lowered (like the height of the mower deck). It raised and lowered pretty darn quick so feathering it was tough.

The hydro lever was in line with the steering column when in "neutral". It was bent and angled back. If thrown all of the way forward it would be visible but so would the angle of the lever.

A little history ... the Quietline series were the last series cubs to use all single cylinder Kohlers. They were built like tanks with heavy cast iron front grill housings to soak up vibration. This tended to cause them to be a bit heavy in the front, making rear wheel weights a necessity on soft ground or when using a snowblower. Reliable and durable although the K321/K341s used in the 1450/1650 typically wore out motor mounts and the pot metal muffler housings tended crack from the vibration.

These vibration problems where solved in the next '82' model series using the Kohler twin magnums.
