My Bil has one of these he bought fairly recently, new. The hydrostatic transmission has quit. He has implements, like an areator, he wants to pull with the JD
but he talked to the dealer and was told it wouldn't pull much, including pulling with nothing behind it up hills. New transmission is $650. He looked at some
other lawn tractors and they have the same transmission. JD puts that transmission in lawn tractors some sizes smaller. He is fed up and sees no reason to
install a weak transmission. Is there any stronger transmission available that can be put in that tractor? To rub salt in the wounds, he has a 30 year old Murray
with gear drive that will pull loads, but needs repair. Thanks.

It's a "LAWN tractor", and from what I have seen around the 'net, his experience is pretty typical. He bought an "LT", not an "LGT", which are WHOLE "different animals" and priced accordingly.

"he talked to the dealer and was told it wouldn't pull much,"

WHY does he not believe what the dealer told him?

Sure makes me glad to have a couple of INDESTRUCTIBLE 318's and a 322 vs. this newer "match the entry-level consumer prices at the Big Box Store" stuff!

He got the mower from a JD dealer. It tore up, maybe just going up a hill in his yard, then went back to the dealer and had the conversation. I'm not sure if he ever pulled any implements. I'm wondering if the transmission from a "LGt" would fit his. By the way, BIL's comment to the dealer after being told about the lack of hill climbing ability was priceless. He reminded him that he didn't live in Florida.

He can overhaul that hydrostat. It's a Tuff Torq K46.
There are videos on Youtube about this, and Tuff Torq will
sell the repair parts. That tractor will never pull ground
engaging implements like a moldboard plow but if he uses
synthetic oil, it will mow a long time for him.

Sure...... he can overhaul what is essentially a highly inferior trans-axle that will still have a limited lifespan even if you only cut grass with it on a level piece of property. Ironic, isn't it....that so many trans-axles from this company are neither Tuff nor Torquey.

I agree with the others on here

He bought a Lawn Tractor designed for LAWN MOWING only, no pulling anything, the dealer wasn't lying to you.

If you want something that will do other than things than mowing and be a bit more beefy you need to buy a Garden Tractor and likely spend $1200 or more depending on brand/features ect.
Problem is everyone seems to want something that will last 40 years but dosen't want to pay over $600 for it and that just is not going to happen.
