I have an MTD garden tractor 8oo series with a HI-LO 7speed shift on the go tran- B&S 16hp twin that runs but always seems to have carb issues any thoughts on what would be a good replacement. I don't mow with it although I have a 44 in deck, have been using it with sleeve hitch tools in the rather large garden we have. I really like the variable speed trans for that type work

Those old Briggs flat head engines were excellent. Lots of torque and had a long life. In my opinion, you should go on the hunt for another carb for it and stick with that engine instead of re-powering the tractor with some aluminum throw-away motor that cannot match the kind of power that the Briggs is capable of. Try using GOOGLE by searching for "Briggs and Stratton engine forums". There is a following for those old engines. You may find someone that has a New Old Stock carb for it or someone who is adept in rebuilding the old carb back to like-new specs.

Is it a horizontal or vertical shaft? Looks like they made them both ways but I'm Not sure I have seen the old ones with a horozontal before.

I am very familiar with a cast iron briggs assuming thats what you have and yes the power can't be beat unless you go diesel. I have some nos parts for them and might have a full carb kit if that would be of help.if you are interested my email is open.

Those old Flat heads were great engines, nothing you buy today can compare to it.

Find someone who can rebuild your carb/fuel pump or find a new carb to get you back up and running.....
