Case 220 Trtactor

Have found a Case two tone 220, original condition with hubcaps all around and 2 decks included. Decks are a J-40 and J-44. Tractor and both decks run perfectly, this tractor only mowed lawns, and has no blade included. Would the motor take the extra load from the 44" deck, or would a person be better off sticking with the 40" deck. Prior conversations had indicated that a 14hp engine should be installed for better usage, wouldn't the 12hp handled regular lawn mowing with the 44" also?

Thanks, Mike

The 220 came with a 10 HP Kohler K engine. The 222 came with a 12 HP Kohler K engine. The 40 Series deck has a 38" cut and was the default deck for all the Lo Pro 200 models. The 44 Series has a 44 inch cut and it was optional on all Lo Pro models. The 46 Series deck has a 48" cut and only the 224 and 226 models with 14 and 16 HP engines were supposed to use those decks. The issue was HP versus how tall and thick your lawn is. I have known of owners who had the 48" deck on a 12 HP Lo Pro and had no problem with it stalling. But perhaps their grass was sparse or perhaps they cut it twice a week. How sharp you keep the blades is another factor.

What works best for your property? You might want to try both next year and see for yourself if there are any shortcomings with either deck.

Gentleman is asking 550.00 for everything, is price to high? Will a K321A Kohler 14hp motor fit in place of the 10hp motor, and fit on frame.?

Mike

The asking price is not unreasonable. As you know, condition, location and demand all play a part. As C/N mentioned, a full set of OEM caps in good shape are probably worth half of the asking price because so few of them have survived and not many sets were sold compared to the number of tractors.

Yes, a K321A/S from another Case will fit just fine because it will have the correct oil pan, crank output shaft and the pump mount ring cast into the block. Even if that donor engine has a starter/alternator, you should be able to transfer the start/gen and correct shrouding so that no wiring alterations are needed. If you like the tractor and everything checks out OK, then haggle for a better price but don't lose it over chump change.

Talked to the man, and said I'd take it at that price. Didn't try to haggle, because in my mind to get an original Case, any size, with the hubcaps and 2 decks and everything works correctly, may not seem like a collector's item to some, but to me, there are very few originals left that are complete and need nothing to make them run, besides they were the correct decks for that size tractor. Only intend to mow lawn with it nothing more. Thanks for the help guys.

A friend of mine had an Allis Chalmers B12 I think. Anyway it had a 12 hp B&S with a hydrostatic transmission. He said it handled a 48" deck quite handily. If your yard is not a lot smoother than mine, I am sure it could handle it at the speed it was comfortable to ride on. However if you are a 100# 12 year old and want to see how fast you can mow and don't care about the ride, you might be able to push it faster than the power you have available. All advice free and double your money back if not satisfied.

Mike, like Tom said the engine is a easy change out, we sold one 220, I think know that engine was out of time on the cam, the machine was less than two weeks old and still the owner said it was short on power, we went and picked it up, he was Right I changed the plug the coil points cond ect, zero change, we needed to solve it quick so I installed a new short block in it, the parts I needed for the change came right off the 10 hp block, Never a issue after that,, I have a 210 here now and was worried it would lack power, it really seems to do fine with the 38" deck on it,, thanks for the trip back in time

My two old JD 212's with 12hp Kohlers were bought very tired but I used a 47" deck and had no trouble (in my judgement with a Variator to slow down once in awhile) mowing deep, sometimes damp grass out here in the boonies. Go too fast and it doesn't make for a townie cut. I seldom mow grass that doesn't need cutting yet like the proper folks in town with the show-off lawns. IaLeo

Mike, Congrats on the 220.. Was that the one on Columbus, Ohio Craigslist?? I thought about buying it for the hubcaps!! I know I am going to hear from Tom on this (LOL) but we put a 48" deck on my son's 210 this spring just to see what would happen... (we rebuilt the K241 first) and it did quite well.. I think he mowed most of the summer in 2nd gear with a few bursts of 3 rd gear.. that K series is a torque monster.. so you should be fine using the 44" deck

C'mon now Dave. I dispense advice in accordance with the recommendations given by J. I. CASE in their Planning Guides. Everyone has to remember that companies like Case want owners to be 100 percent happy with the product. So they choose to err on the side of caution instead of splitting hairs by saying... Well... the 48" deck is OK providing the conditions are right. That isn't good marketing. If someone insists on using a 48" deck on a 10 HP tractor, then that is there choice. If it works for them, then great. But it might not work well for someone else. As for Jonathan, that kid has come down with the same sickness you have Dave. CASE-ITIS.

I knew it would not take long..LOL Tom is correct, For all around use, I would stick with the 44, we just had a good 48 sitting there and decided to try it instead of putting new bearings in the J44 deck. Yes, Jonathan has the disease as do both of my other kids.. I am certain that you saw Rosie on her Colt in LAGT..
