Cub cadet 1730

I am looking at a Cub Cadet 1730. It runs but needs a battery and exhaust work. The owner wants $250 for it, is that a fair price? Thanks.

As long as you understand it is a Lawn Tractor and not a garden tractor, condition is everything.

It's a gamble. $250 is as high as I would go. Unless it is in exceptional condition -- I would pass on it. The main trouble with the 1730s (and 1430/1330) are the hydro/transmissions. The hydro unit had no filter and no drain plug for changing the fluid. It has a reserviour and filler cap to check and keep the level topped off, but these tended to crack open and let dirt in and the fluid evaporates then the hydro unit destroys itself. First thing to check ... does it have a weak forward or reverse? If so, those are symptoms. To check the fluid level in the reserviour you have to take the battery out. If the fluid level is not visible and/or the filler cap is busted, that's trouble and even if it runs decent now it may not last long. These were great lawn tractors but were 'made to die'. My $.02.
