not sure how all this works but I am trying. My e-mail is [email protected] and if you could post a message as well as send it to my e-mail then I think I will get your much appreciated answer. I have a Gravely 20G was running fine then 30 minutes later no start. As soon as I turn the ignition on I hear a clicking sound. I do not think it is the solenoid as the clicking starts with the key at the on position, also I can not feel any motion at the solenoid with my hand as the clicking progresses. I think the clicking may be at the fuel pump as I can feel movement at the fuel filter, but I replaced the fuel pump just 4 months ago. any ideas? When I turn the key to start nothing happens. By nothing I mean the engine will not try to start and the clicking continues. The clicking is very rapid. Thanks in advance - Mark

I don't know the specific electrical issues of a 20G, but I have had a 16G for years and assume that they are similar.

If you have a clicking noise at your fuel pump, I have to assume that it is an electric fuel pump. (I think that the fuel pump on my 16G is mechanical---but I can't check right now since it is 100 miles away. I would assume that the fuel pump is wired to turn the pump on whenever the key switch is "on".

I'm guessing that the non starting issue isn't related to the fuel pump. The G series have a number of safety switches which will prevent the engine from starting. I don't believe that it will start if the PTO is in the "on" position, and I don't believe that it will start if either the forward or reverse clutches are engaged. I believe that it will start without weight on the driver's seat, but the engine will die if you engage the forward or reverse clutch without having weight on the seat.

I would start by making sure that the PTO and/or drive clutches are not engaged. If that isn't the problem, you should check your entire electrical system. Your problem could be a very weak or dead battery, corroded battery terminals, a bad ignition switch, a bad starter solenoid, corroded terminals on the starter solenoid, a bad starter, etc.

Check for a clogged filter if it "clicks" very rapidly it is not getting any fuel. If you don't have a fuel filer before the pump, there should be a screen on the inlet side of pump clean that. I would install a fuel filter before the pump if there is not one. Let us know what you find out.

You called it! Thanks a lot! There was not a filter prior to the pump which I corrected as per your suggestion. I used carburetor cleaner to flush out the pump and it runs great now, I think this will also solve a problem of periodic power lose I was have before.
Thanks again - Mark
