kohler magnum 8hp

I have a 8 hp kohler magnum and it is starting to burn a lot of oil. are the engines fairly easy to take apart and put in new rings and what else should I be looking for if I tear this thing apart. are parts readily available for these engines? I hope to get this thing running great again.

Below is a link to the factory service manual containing dis-assembly and assembly instructions, dimensions, wear limits, etc..

Be sure to check the rod. And measure the crankpin with a micrometer. At least plastiguage it. If its clearance is much over .0015, it will probably have an audible knock.
Also, if you have .005 or more wear in the cylinder, be warned that a basic ring job will probably not be a long life fix.

Make sure and check the rod for stretched and the crank for out of round when you have it apart.

I have rebuilt a couple, not too bad, same guts as K181, main difference is electronic ign vs K series' points....
when looking up you will see reference to new or old style piston and rod/ either style can be used as long as they are not inner mixed.
