Troy Bilt horse manual.

I'm wanting to tear into my TB horse and put new seals and bearings in the transmission this winter. Anyone have an idea what manual folks get to do them?

I work for a servicing dealer for MTD. I am unaware that they have any manual for assembling the gearboxes. When I call MTD for help, they know they made the Horse, but are pretty much no help at all. Hopefully you can come up with some vintage Garden Way info. (Garden Way made the original Horse before MTD bought them out.)

The main thing when setting one up is to use the correct number of shims so there is no end play but very little pre-load in the tapered bearings. They also want you to use new screws in the side cover on the tine shaft for some reason. I guess they are either 'torque to yield' or the heads seal the bolt threads in the case.

P.S. Better fix it soon. MTD has already obosoleted some important parts for the Pony. Had a Pony in the shop that needed a main shaft. NLA.

They made a shop manual for the horse and it explains all of the shims and complete teardown of the transmission, I rebuilt one about 2 years ago and spent about $400 on shafts (3 each). There several videos on you tube that show how to do it also

Back in the 1970's and 80's I had purchased about 30 of those tillers. I had bought 3 new tillers the first one had a 7hp Kohler engine, I sold it
for more than I paid. When the 8hp Kohler came out I bought another tiller until the black tiller came out for the 25th anniversary. A lot of the tillers I bought were never sheltered and when they came out with interlocks on the handles water would prevent starting. I used that spray that the old television sets used to clean the turret channel on the tv. This stopped the picture from flicking on the tv. I watched a service tv
repairman and that's what I used. I bought this tiller for $100.00 and it was in sad shape. I sold the 6hp Tecumseh engine for $65.00. It also needed new tines and new seals under the tine holder. I installed a new 10hp B&S engine with electric start. Hal

I believe mine is a 1976. At least that's what is in the casting for the transmission. Did you ever use a manual or is it pretty straightforward? The only part that I wonder about is I hear something should have a preload on it.

MTD bought them, they can get you that information if you CALL them, I do not think it is on the web.
