warner mag stop electric clutch

After mowing for about an hour this clutch will just kick out and i can re engage it it will run for a minute or so an kick off. if i let it sit for a while then use it again it will work fine until it gets hot again. is there an adjustment or what is wrong. its a warner mag stop CMSR 175

What is the air gap between the plates when everything is off? It should be down like .011. I have seen them start failing to engage or drop out at about .040 or more.

Use a feeler gauge between the 2 plates. One should be dragging/resting on the magnet when it is off and the other should be next to it, with an air gap between them when off.

First thing to do is isolate problem to clutch itself or electrical system on tractor/equipment clutch installed on.Connect a 12v test light to wiring harness/clutch connector & run with light connected, when clutch kicks out check to see if light still on,if so problem in clutch,if light out the problem is in electrical system.

Several possible causes of power loss to clutch,if elect system has an auto reset breaker for pto breaker weak or possible loose/bad connections at breaker generating excess heat causeing breaker to trip,if pto circuit has a fuse, fuse holder going bad/connections loose on same, other possible causes if not breaker/fuse holder, ign sw going bad or loose connection(s) at same, pto sw/plug on connector for sw going bad,if pto sw operates a relay for clutch contacts in relay going bad or connector for relay loose/bad.

If it is an electrical problem get a wiring diag for tractor/equipment clutch used on & starting at clutch connector work back in wiring following wiring diag towards battery till you find source of voltage loss.

i found out the switch itself kicks the clutch out. so is it the switch is bad or could it be the clutch itself is pulling so much current it kicks the switch out?

Measure the current(amps) draw of clutch then google warner cmsr175 & see if you can find out current draw spec at warner website or online dealers listing same, most 12v clutches draw 3.25A-4.5A depending on mfg.If you find the current draw spec for clutch & clutch draw is within spec then problem in pto sw,ign sw or wiring. If I remember correctly some of the older jd tractors had an auto reset mini breaker in ign sw & pto sw which may be going bad, you'll have to determine if ign sw/pto sw has same or if problem elsewere in elect system.
