Repower a Massey Ferguson 12 hydro

I am reworking a MF 12 lawn tractor and the engine is shot. Can some one tell me what engine I can use to re power with that will fit . I am looking at the 9 hp Caroll Stream elect. Start and wonder if it will fit and not have to modify the hood or grill. If you have had a similar experience please advise. Thanks in advance. gcm

Carroll stream posts the dimensions of their engine on their website. Whether you had a Kohler or Tec engine previously, it is a simple matter to compare the length, width and height.

You can also compare the diameter and length of the output shaft to see if your old pulley will work. I don't visualize any issues. Fuel, choke, throttle should all hook up. Wiring may need to be changed but the wiring is pretty basic. Keep in mind that this will be a daytime tractor unless you switch to LED lighting.

Thanks Tom, it doesn't have lights now so I probably want add lights. I think the 9 hp should have plenty of power to run the hydro transmission belt wouldn't you think?

Unless you are in a really big hurry, you can overhaul the original engine
for about the same cost as the Carol stream motor. There are aftermarket parts
available for the Tecumseh engine but you have to do a little looking.

There should be no issues with that engine providing enough power for the hydro. After all, the only work you intend to do with the tractor is to drive it around and pull the odd item. Therefore, all of the HP will be constantly available for the hydro and not be split off to power a deck or snow blower. I have never been a fan of TEC engines so if I was in your shoes, I would go with an entirely new engine that was already to run for a fixed price instead of delving into the unknown with buying new parts and having a machine shop perform their magic on an old engine.

The engine was changed some time back because it is a 10 hp engine and this tractor should have a 12 hp from the factory. I took the engine apart and the block was worn and the piston was worn out so I began to look for a o/ s piston but a standard piston was all I could find and yes it is a Tec. Engine. I will probably go with the 9 hp Carroll stream engine. I checked all the measurements and it should fit nicely. Thanks for all the info. gcm

i really like the older horizontal twins from bs. plus they run at 1800 rpm which kinda sounds better to me than 3600 rpm.
there's my 2 cents
