briggs twin-v engine

I was given a yard machine with a briggs twin v engine in it. it runs fine but I was having a problem that when ran for a while it would not restart if it was shut off. the oil was thick and very black like it had not been changed for quiet a while. I changed the oil and then cut the grass, I got off and of course it shut off. this time it restarted without any problem. I am wondering if the old oil was causing it to run to hot which might have kept it from restarting? I can not complain about it for the price I have in it. the previous owner told me it would not go faster than about 1/2 A mile an hour. I found the battery strap under a pulley which caused that. He also gave me the bagger for it and it beats using a push mower. Any opinions on it not restarting when hot, if it is still doing it? possibly the ignition causing it.

ps: he was paying some else to change the oil, I do not think they were.

If the oil was not lubricating very well, it probably was running extra hot.

If it fails to crank again, be ready to check for spark. If you have spark, check the fuel solenoid, you should hear it click. If you don't hear it, put your finger on it and see if you can feel it move when a helper turns the ignition switch to ON position.(Be careful, the fuel solenoid is just above the hot muffler on a lot of mufflers.
